Background of the Study
Damboa Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State has been a hotspot for insurgency, with devastating impacts on its communities, economy, and infrastructure. Insurgency undermines security and displaces thousands, leaving a significant humanitarian crisis in its wake. Communication plays a vital role in countering insurgency by fostering trust, disseminating accurate information, and promoting peacebuilding efforts. Development communication employs strategies such as public campaigns, counter-narratives, and community dialogue to address the drivers of insurgency and create resilience within affected communities (Abubakar & Sadiq, 2023). Studies have highlighted that participatory communication channels, such as community radio and local forums, are effective in dispelling misinformation, countering extremist ideologies, and rebuilding trust among stakeholders (Ibrahim et al., 2024). This study explores how communication strategies can be leveraged to mitigate insurgency in Damboa LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous efforts to tackle insurgency in Damboa LGA, a lack of effective communication between the government, security forces, and communities has hindered progress. In many cases, the absence of transparent and inclusive communication creates mistrust, leaving residents vulnerable to extremist narratives. Furthermore, limited access to reliable information exacerbates fear and displacement. Addressing these gaps through well-designed communication strategies is critical for mitigating insurgency and fostering peace in Damboa LGA. This study assesses the role of development communication in addressing insurgency, highlighting its potential to enhance security and community resilience.
